Wroclaw Medical University is once again joining the Helpers’ Generation campaign organized by the DKMS Foundation. Registration of potential bone marrow donors will take place from 1 to 6 December.
Every 40 minutes, someone in Poland learns that they have blood cancer or another disease of the hematopoietic system. For many of these individuals, the only chance for survival is a transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells from blood or bone marrow from a matching donor. Only 25% of patients qualified for transplantation will find a donor within their family; 75% of patients in need of a bone marrow transplant must rely on an unrelated donor. Currently, as many as one in five Polish patients is unable to find their “genetic twin” and cannot undergo transplantation. The only hope for these patients is newly registered potential donors.
