“The Hirszfelds and the Blood That Changed the World.”

The Medical Discovery Centre of Wroclaw Medical University (UMW) invites you to an event organized as part of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOŚP): “The Hirszfelds and the Blood That Changed the World.”

The program includes, among other highlights, a screening of the documentary film Mensch.

Mensch is the first feature-length documentary dedicated to Professor Ludwik Hirszfeld, the discoverer of blood groups and one of the founding fathers of modern immunology. The film, directed by Paweł Wysoczański, has received numerous prestigious awards, including:

  • Audience Award for Best Documentary Film – Austin Polish Film Festival (Audience Choice Award)
  • Award for Best Documentary Director in Toronto
  • National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) Award at the Gdynia Film Festival
  • Golden Current (Złoty Nurt) Award at the “Nurt” Documentary Film Festival in Kielce

The screening will take place in the historic Professor Wiktor Bross Hall of the former General Surgery Clinic, located at 66–68 Maria Curie-Skłodowska Street in Wrocław. The building currently houses the developing Medical Discovery Centre of UMW.

Following the screening, a discussion will be held with experts who are deeply familiar with the lives and legacy of the Hirszfelds:

  • Paweł Wysoczański – director of Mensch, a graduate in directing from the Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School in Katowice
  • Sebastian Bagiński – licensed city guide in Wrocław (Saturday)
  • Magdalena Drogosz – licensed city guide (Sunday)
  • Janina Wartenberg – veterinarian, long-time assistant to Professor Ludwik Hirszfeld in post-war Wrocław, and a member of the Polish Society for the History of Medical Sciences

The event will also feature actors from the Układ Formalny Theatre, who will portray Hanna and Ludwik Hirszfeld. All participants will have the opportunity to take a commemorative photo with them.

As part of the WOŚP initiative, additional charity auctions are planned, including archival photographs of Hanna and Ludwik Hirszfeld, selected stills from the film Mensch, as well as a guided visit to the preserved office of Professor Hirszfeld, located at the present Department of Microbiology of Wroclaw Medical University at 4 Chałubińskiego Street.
