Prof. Jean-Paul Selten (Maastricht University, the Netherlands) – psychiatrist and epidemiologist, and proposer of the Social Defeat Hypothesis of Schizophrenia – will deliver a lecture at the Medical University of Wrocław entitled:
“The social defeat hypothesis of schizophrenia: origins, test results, challenges and promises.”
The lecture will take place on Thursday, May 7, at the Department of Psychiatry, Medical University of Wrocław.
In his theoretical model, Prof. Selten describes mechanisms through which chronic experiences of social exclusion (“social defeat”) may increase vulnerability to emergence of psychiatric disorders. His research is particularly focused on the risk of psychotic disorders.
Prof. Selten’s work is among the most frequently cited in the field of social psychiatry and the epidemiology of psychoses. It includes, among others, studies on the risk of psychosis among migrants and individuals belonging to minority groups. In his research, Prof. Selten seeks to integrate epidemiological data with neurobiological models explaining the mechanisms underlying the development of mental disorders.
The lecture will provide an opportunity to discuss the relevance of this hypothesis in the context of contemporary social change, migration, and increasing cultural diversity, as well as its limitations, methodological challenges, and directions for future research.
The event is intended for all those interested in psychiatry, psychology, and the social determinants of mental health. All are welcome – free admission.
