Prof. Dimitri Van der Linden, a paediatrician and infectious diseases specialist affiliated with Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc in Brussels and UCLouvain, will speak about antimicrobial resistance, the One Health approach and global health challenges. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 19 May, from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm in a hybrid format. It will be accompanied by a discussion with experts from Wrocław Medical University.
Prof. Dimitri Van der Linden specialises in paediatric infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, global health, HIV, tuberculosis and infections in children from high-risk groups, including immunosuppressed patients. He has also worked in Africa, where limited access to microbiological diagnostics seriously hampers the treatment of severe infections.
Prof. Van der Linden is currently crossing Europe, from Thessaloniki to Stockholm, as part of the Njilabo Journey. This trans-European cycling expedition is part of a charity campaign aimed at raising awareness of antimicrobial resistance and collecting EUR 100,000 to establish a microbiology laboratory in Mbujimayi, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The laboratory is intended to serve a region of around 7 million people, where there is no functional bacteriology laboratory. This is particularly important for children with sickle cell disease who are cared for by the local clinic and are at risk of severe infections, including sepsis.
During his lecture, “One Health on Two Wheels: From Thessaloniki to Stockholm to Tackle Antimicrobial Resistance and Build Microbiology Capacity in Mbujimayi, DRC”, Prof. Dimitri Van der Linden will present the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance, its global scale, and the key diagnostic and therapeutic challenges faced by countries with limited resources. The program will also include a Polish perspective on antimicrobial resistance, an analysis of a hantavirus outbreak from a One Health perspective, a panel discussion and a Q&A session.
