How can viruses contribute to the development of cancer while also becoming tools to fight it? Vanessa Salete de Paula, PhD, a distinguished virologist from the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (Fiocruz) in Brazil, will explore this fascinating paradox.

We invite you to attend the lecture “Oncoviruses and oncolytic viruses – from mechanisms of carcinogenesis to targeted therapies”, which will take place on 7 September 2026 at 12:00 in the lecture room of the Department of General and Experimental Pathology at Wroclaw Medical University, ul. K. Marcinkowskiego 1, Wrocław.

The event is being held as part of the Wroclaw Medical University Scientific Excellence Initiative. The visit has been organised by Irena Duś-Ilnicka, PhD, Professor at Wroclaw Medical University, at the invitation of Professor Piotr Donizy, and marks an important step towards establishing international collaboration around the VirODerm project. The project focuses on the development of oncolytic viruses as an innovative immunotherapy platform for aggressive skin cancers.

The project is led by Professor Jakub Siednienko and Professor Piotr Donizy as part of the newly established Laboratory of Experimental Diagnostics and Translational Therapies (LEDTT) within the Department of General and Experimental Pathology. The department forms part of the Department of Clinical and Experimental Pathology, headed by Professor Agnieszka Hałoń.
