Wroclaw Medical University among the top Polish institutions in the Leiden Ranking 2025

Wroclaw Medical University ranked 3rd among Polish medical universities and 11th nationwide in the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2025, which assesses universities around the world based on the scientific impact of their publications.

The Leiden Ranking is based exclusively on the analysis of bibliometric data from the Web of Science (Clarivate). Unlike prestige- or reputation-based rankings, it objectively measures how often a university’s publications are cited by researchers worldwide.

In the analyzed period 2020–2023, Wroclaw Medical University researchers published over 2,300 scientific papers, of which 9% were among the top 10% most cited publications in their respective fields. Nearly half of the university’s research output belongs to the top 50% most influential scientific papers globally.

The vast majority of UMW’s publications come from the field of biomedicine and health sciences, reflecting the university’s research profile and its significance in international academic medicine.

The 2025 edition of the Leiden Ranking also marks a step toward greater openness and inclusiveness in science. For the first time, two parallel versions of the ranking have been published — the Traditional Edition (based on Web of Science data) and the Open Edition, which uses open data from the OpenAlex database.
